TRAVELER SLEPT HERE: Historic Staunton Foundation Recognizes Staunton, Virginia
Bed and Breakfast for Excellence in the Restoration and Renovation of Historic
Carriage House, Staunton, Virginia, December 13, 2004.
The Staunton Choral Gardens Bed and Breakfast in Staunton, Virginia was
recognized by Historic Staunton Foundation at their annual Board of Directors
Meeting in December 2004 for showing excellence in the restoration and
renovation of a 150-year-old historic carriage house, which is now a luxurious
two-story B&B suite. This Carriage House is said to be been have used by General
Robert E. Lee for boarding his horse, Traveler, when General Lee, traveling from
his home town of Lexington, Virginia, visited his daughters who were attending
school in Staunton. His daughters attended a prestigious private boarding
school which is across the street from The Staunton Choral Gardens B&B. In
those days it was called the Virginia Female Institute (V.F.I.). In 1880, Flora
Cooke Stuart, or Mrs. General J.E.B. Stuart, as she preferred to be called, was
named principal, a position she held for 19 years. The school was renamed in
her honor eight years after her retirement in 1907. Since then it has been
known as Stuart Hall and still occupies the beautiful stately buildings across
the street from The Staunton Choral Gardens Bed and Breakfast.
The Staunton Choral Gardens Bed and Breakfast is pleased to receive this
recognition for providing excellence in B&B accommodations. Some guests have
described this B&B as "finding an oasis right in downtown Staunton." In
addition to the 800-square-foot carriage house (which includes a garage,
formerly part of the stable area and is currently set up as a 6' x 4' kennel
area for Carriage House guests), the main house features three guest rooms, a TV
lounge, the front parlor, and the dining room. Several spacious gardens are
being developed. There is off-street parking on the property for guests.
The bed and breakfast is located at 216 West Frederick Street, Staunton,
Virginia. Call the B&B at (540) 885-6556 or e-mail: [email protected].
